features, features, features!

This week I started my new internship at the Loveland Reporter-Herald. It's been really nice to get back behind the camera again after taking about a week off. So far, I've done many features.
Here are a few:
Kids climbing an art sculpture outside the downtown museum in Loveland.

A city worker tending the tulips on one of the street corners in downtown Loveland.

Crossing Guard Pat Hall sheltering Lee Burke from the rain after school today.

Workers from a local company that's working on a hybrid car cleaning up "fake snow" that got loose from the dumpsters after they disposed of it last week in downtown Loveland.

the smallest cowboy

About a month or so ago I photographed a church service that was held on a Saturday night at a high school rodeo. Because the kids rodeo all day Saturday and Sunday, they usually bring in someone who hosts a church service somewhere near the arena or (like this case) in the arena. I ended up being much more taken with the preacher's sun, though, who is the smallest cowboy I've ever seen.

let's play ball

I rarely post sports photos, because I am not as fond of shooting sports and (to put it politely) I feel as though I'm not very good at shooting them...

But here are a few interesting shots I took at one of the championship softball games. The cropping is kinda fun on two of them.

unfortunately, you can't see her facial expression at this size, but it's the best part.

"don't be afraid to quit"

Last weekend we went to Amherst, MA to witness my older sister graduate from Hampshire College as a pre-med student. She worked her ass off there, and I was so proud to see her finally walk.

The speaker spoke about not being afraid to quit if you're in a bad job. I don't think she'll ever have that problem.

cleaning the disgusting dorms or "mod" where she lived.

for such an environmentally conscious campus full of tree huggers, they sure did throw out a lot of stuff...

saying goodbye.

beauty

May 11, 2009

Often, I wonder how we are still existing. I wonder how people can rape and murder and commit crimes throughout the world... And all the while I am sitting in the safety of my own home with enough time to wonder.
I have decided that it is not about war, nor is it about death. It's about the beauty found in spite of it all. Even in the face of desolation, the sun still sets and casts the most graceful light across everything. The black columns of smoke that mark loss and sadness still swirl in the most uniquely beautiful way.
As soldiers tramp by, a flower looks on.
If we are to survive these darkest of dark days, we must never forget to notice the beauty of life that constantly surrounds us. We must learn to feel that common love which we all inherently share.
There is something to be said for the beauty that is found solely in the present moment.
Why am I a photographer?
Because I'm obsessed with capturing that beauty, that moment, and sharing it with the world.

life goes on...

see how we fade."
